AMBERINA Milk Pitcher. Blown glass in an Optic Ribbed pattern. Bulbous body with short (1 1/2h.) cylindrical neck (2 3/8 d.) and a pinched spout. Applied amber, reeded handle. Polished pontil. 10 vertical panels extend from the edge of the polished pontil through the neck. 5 1/4h. The maximum diameter of the body is 5. Unsigned. 1880s. Presumably New England Glass Co. based on the presence of a pitcher with this same form in Joseph Locke's Sketchbook. Shuman (Collector's Encylopedia of American Art Glass, p. 52) shows a 5 reverse amberina pitcher with the same form in a Quilted Diamond pattern, which he attributes to New England Glass. He also shows (p. 50) a 7 3/4 h. crackle amberina pitcher in the same form with an applied ribbed handle & ground pontil, but without attribution. Scattered tiny bubbles in-the-making. Appropriate wear around the base o/w Fine (No defects).
