1st edition, 1st printing. v, 7-164pp. sm8vo. Red cloth with both covers blindstamped with an overall diaper pattern. Black-lettered spine. Frontispiece & 7 other b/w plates illustrated by J. K. Bryans. Many cuts of various sizes throughout the text also by Bryans whose 'Silhouetteville' cartoons were a feature in most daily & Sunday newspaper of the period. The author (1869-1917) was an Afro-American minister born in Michigan. He was a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago (the location of the fictitious Black Cat Club) and later served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Lexington, VA. He was well known as a poet & author of short stories, which were published in leading newspapers. His wife, Rosina Tucker, was the founder & Secretary-Treasurer of the International Ladies' Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which she also helped establish. Spine worn & faded darkened with extremes worn, corners rubbed & lightly bumped, several very small minor scuffs on the front cover o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects.
