1st edition. 297pp. 8vo. Orange cloth with black-lettered front cover & spine, both bearing a small decorative device in black. Title page illustrated with a racist caricature of an Afro-American man in a tall hat. Despite often being attributed to Opie Percival Read, there is no documentation to support his authorship. The only bibliography online for Read does not list this title. [http://www.utc.edu/Academic/TennesseeWriters/authors/read.opie.html]; the U.S. Copyright Office lists the title as being copyrighted by the publisher; the LOC lists the author as anonymous; Charles L. Blockson (Damn Rare: The Memoirs of an African-American Bibliophile) does not attribute the book to Read or anyone else. Top of the spine has a 3/4' h. x 5/8' w. section of the spine cover missing, bottom of the spine has a smaller area where the spine cover is worn through, faint dampstained areas on the front cover & spine, scattered faint spots of dampstain over the back cover, a 1 1/8' section of heavy rubbing at the bottom of the outer edge of the front cover, top edge dusty & others slightly tanned, a previous owner's name in ink on the front endpaper o/w Good, i.e. obvious signs of use with no major defects.
