Introduction by Ray Stannard Baker. * GHD synbol on title page. The author (1869-1917) was an Afro-American minister born in Michigan. He was a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago (the location of the fictitious Black Cat Club) and later served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Lexington, VA. He was well known as a poet & author of short stories, which were published in leading newspapers. His wife, Rosina Tucker, was the founder & Secretary-Treasurer of the International Ladies' Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which she also helped establish. Wear along the edges of the covers & on spine extremes; moderate wear to the white lettering; light wear on spine itself along with some heavy lead pencil-like lines; back cover has scattered light spotting o/w Good, i.e. obvious signs of use with no major defects.
