140pp. Oblong 24mo. Dark blue cloth with gilt-lettered spine. Frontispiece + 20 other color plates on coated paper show 38 violins & 6 bows. This catalog includes a incredible cross-section of the best violins ever made from the 17th thru the early 19th centuries. Among the legendary violins featured, are several original Stradivarius violins & the examples from the other Cremona families such as Amati, Bergonzi, Guarnieri, & Ruggeri. Descriptions & prices of each violin are given & many facsimiles of violin labels are shown. The catalog is comprised of a Preface, 'How You Can Buy', a woodcut of 2 medieval musicians dated 1879, 'The Hawley Collection', 'Important Announcement' (concerning the Hawley Collection), 'Catalogue of the Lyon & Healey Collection of Rare Old Violins, 1903 - 1904', 'Strings', 'Restoration of Old Violins', 'Technical and Other Violin Works', 'A New Departure in New Violins', 'Violins for Beginners, Pupils and Orchestra Playing' & 'Practical Hints on the Care of Violins'. The final page contains 'The Poor Fiddler's Ode to His Old Fiddle' printed within the shape of a violin. Contents are Fine, i.e. no defects. Covers moderately stained with some edge wear, spine extremes rubbed, lower left corner of the back cover heavily bumped & little bump on the right edge of the front cover, some wear to gilt on the spine o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects.
