102, [6, publisher's ads]pp. Tall 32mo. Full red flexible leather covers with the front cover bordered in gilt with scrolling vines with holly leaves & berries in opposing corners & another foliage device in the other opposing corners. The title is enclosed in a wreathe of foliage combining the different motifs in the corners. Gilt-lettered spine decorated with a variation of the wreathe about 2/3 up the spine & a smaller gilt foliage device above the title. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Endpapers decorated in blue with large, diamond-shapes of ornate scrolling foliage surrounding 'The Ariel Booklets' in a band around the publisher's monogram. Title page, printed in red & black, bears precisely the title 'Virginibus Puerisque'. Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece of Stevenson by Samuel Hollyer (1826 - 1919). Note: The September 19, 1903 issue of the New York Times reported that G. P. Putnam's Sons would be publishing Virginibus Puerisque that Autumn in their Ariel Booklets series. Top right corner of the front cover rubbed; spine extremes a little rubbed; 1908 gift inscription in ink on the front flyleaf o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects.
