1st edition. 467pp. Tall 8vo. Dark blue cloth with Lincoln's signature in gilt on the front. The top of the spine has a stem with paired leaves in gilt above a red panel with multiple gilt rulings at its top & bottom wherein the title is printed in gilt. A band of 3 stars divides the upper panel from the mid-panel which is a smaller version of the upper on except it bears the author's name in gilt. Below is another section of the paired leaves on a stem in gilt followed by a bottom panel like those above except carrying the publisher's name. Top edge blue & foredge uncut. on spine. Frontispiece + 15 b/w other plates on coated paper. Index. Very Good, i.e. minor signs of careful use with no significant defects/ DJ (spine extremes very worn, the back is partly dulled where the gloss on the paper is absent o/w Very Good with unclipped price).

1st edition, 1st printing of the One Volume Edition. 762pp. Tall 8vo. Red cloth with facsimile Lincoln signature in gilt on the front cover. Spine bears the title & author's name in gilt within a gilt-bordered, glossy red panel. Top edge red. Illustrated black endpapers designed by Edward Steichen. 100+ b/w photographs & line drawings. Bibliography & index. 4 fairly faint water spots (largest being 5/8' in diameter & others much smaller) on the front cover, a previous owner's (William C. Van Vleck) signature in ink on the title page, a few small spots on the text block edges o/w Very Good, i.e. some signs of careful use with no significant defects. No dustjacket. William Cabell Van Vleck was Dean of the George Washington University Law School from 1924 - 1948. His 1932 book 'The Administrative Control of Aliens: A Study in Administrative Law and Procedure' was a major cause of immigration reforms during the Roosevelt administration and is still referenced today by civil libertarians. The cover also has 2 small gilt wreathes; decorative shields, ribbons & bows, & rectangular borders around the title in black; an outer border in green & black; & a green black wreathe around a pastedown b/w cameo photo of McKinley. The spine bears the title 'Life and Public Services of William McKinley' & 'Memorial Volume' in gilt along with ribbons & a wreathe over a fasces in green & black. All edges marbled. Decorated endpapers in light green. Many b/w photo plates.
