1st American printing. xii, 328pp. 8vo. Olive green cloth. Front cover diestamped with a seagull & the title in slate blue; author diestamped in black. Black-lettered spine. Top edge blue-green, others uncut. This is the rare first novel of only two by Basil Lubbock, the foremost historian of the sailing ship era. Spine a little faded, very light dampstains at the top edge of the back cover, foreedge has several spots of foxing, a previous owner's name in ink on the front pastedown endpaper o/w Very Good, i.e. some signs of careful use with no significant defects. 1st edition, 1st printing. 430pp. Tall 8vo. 1/4 gray cloth & light. blue cloth. Spine lettered in gray within a panel of blue darker than the blue on the covers. ORIGINAL BOOKMARK (black on red paper, 9 1/4' x 3 1/4') with the title & author's name along with illustrations with themes related to the book on one side, & translations of key Maori words used in the novel (As New). A novel of Nantucket's early 19th C. whaling days in New Zealand & the South Pacific. Very faint paste action in the gutters of both endpapers o/w Fine (no defects)/ DJ (bottom edge of the spine has wear & some creasing; tip of the upper right corner of the front is worn; a dampstain extends down the inside fold of the back flap, but has no affect on the exterior of the fold or back cover o/w Fine with unclipped price).
