1 ..... Souvenir Card: BEST WISHES OF YOUR TEACHER.
No Publisher. No place. No date.
5' x 8 1/2' h. Diecut, embossed, chromolithograph printed on heavy, glossy stock. This is a double card with the edges of both irregularly scalloped; the cards are tied together with a pink ribbon through a hole at the top of each. The front card has a broad outer border of cross-hatching with blue dots over pink in the diamonds & is overlaid with embossed flowers, buds, leaves & bows outlined in gilt. The inner panel is light blue shading toward white at the top & bottom & contains 'With Best Wishes of Your Teacher' in dark brown at the top. The middle of the panel & part of the outer border is covered with large circular frame attached to a handle (could be a fan, hand mirror, or magnifying Glass) tilted to the right within which is an illustration of people approaching a lighted church in a snowy landscape. Roses & forget-me-nots are tied to the handle with a ribbon & the bouquet extends around the bottom of the frame. The second card contains 11 'Gems Of Thought' printed in dark red on pink-coated stock within an ornate border. The back of the second card is handwritten in ink 'Presented to Verdie M. Herman by H. W. Smith'. [Verdie Matilda Herman was born July 6, 1893 in Penn Township, Snyder County, PA]. Cards with 'best wishes' from teachers were popular from the late 19th C. until WW1. Some were given to graduating students as souvenirs (titled as such & often with the names of classmate printed on the second card). Others were clearly given at Christmas. This card could he used for either purpose. The second card has tape stains along the bottom edge, a faint crease on the tip of the top right corner, & an area on the bottom edge of the back where the pink coating is chipped o/w Fine (no defects).
