630pp. sm8vo. Tan cloth with overall, ornate flower/ foliage, rulings, & other decorative devices stamped in black on front cover & spine. Title lettering on cover is in tan & 'Alta Edition' in black. Spine title printed in black over an ornate gilt panel. Dark brown endpapers. Engraved, tissue-guarded frontispiece of Crusoe & Friday. 'Includes A Memoir Of The Author, And An Essay On His Writings'. Porter & Coates first issued this title in 1870 with 8 leaves of plates & in the same pagination as this later undated copy which lacks all plates save the frontispiece. A previous name & 'Dec. 30, 1882' written in pencil on front free endpaper. Both hinges broken, but holding well with a tight spine cover; top of spine frayed; the front free endpaper has a 3/4' long x 1/8' deep edge chip; the upper right corner of the front flyleaf has a 1' x 1' chunk missing o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. Presumably, this is a presentation to Denise Goeckel for whom a Memorial Scholarship Fund was named. She was a highly respected language arts teacher in Centerville, OH.
