1st edition. xii, 403pp. 8vo. 1/2 red leather & boards marbled in shades of blue, white & gilt; interior sides of the leather double-ruled in gilt. The spine has 5 raised bands & is divided into 6 panels each framed by double-rulings in gilt & containing a tiny quatrefoil in each corner. Title, author's last name, '1887' & a library call number are printed in gilt in separate panels. Marbled endpapers match the cover. Top edge gilt. No illustrations. EX LIBRARY. The endpaper over the front hinge is cracked & the hinge may have been repaired, but the hinge & spine are tight & unaffected (see scan); all edges rubbed with particularly heavy wear along both sides of the spine & the corners; corners bumped & worn; lower right corner of the initial 2 blank leaves & the title page clipped; lower right corner of the sub-title page creased; printed Pennsylvania State Library label on pastedown front endpaper; embossed library seal on title page & first page of 'Contents' which also has an acquisition number stamped at the bottom; library envelop attached to back pastedown endpaper; o/w Good, i.e. obvious signs of use with no major defects.
