Spine has 'Scott's Poetic Works' gilt-lettered in a red panel & ornate gilt diaper bands at the top, bottom & below the panel. Typical ornate Victorian gilt devices decorated the areas between the 2 raised bands of the spine. Marbled edges & endpapers matching covers. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Scott with tissue guard & 15 other plates by various artists (including at least 5 by Edward Henry Corbould) engraved mostly by the Brothers Dalziel. Preliminary memoir by William Bell Scott (1811-1890). All edges & spine extremes heavily rubbed; corners bumped; scattered scuffs on the leather portions including the top of the spine & raised bands; spine darkened with some wear; marbling on top & bottom of the textblock somewhat faded; a previous owner's ink stamp (Irving Whalley - presumably John Irving Whalley [1902 - 1980], a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania) on the back of the front free endpaper; some very light spots of foxing on the initial pages including the margins of the frontispiece; occasional spots of light foxing throughout o/w Very Good, i.e. shows signs of careful use with no significant defects.
