1st edition. 380pp. 8vo. Green pebbled cloth with front cover giltstamped with a camp scene & gilt-lettered spine. Tissue-guarded frontispiece of the author + 19 other b/w engraved plates with 22 illustrations of various Civil War scenes courtesy of Harper & Brothers. Introduction by 'S.L.C.' The list of illustrations was printed with incorrect page numbers. The author (1846-1902), who was an upstate New York seamstress prior to the war, herein compiled her experiences as an army nurse in various hospitals & camps during the Civil War. Her account captures in detail all the Horrors of war, as well as giving early expression to women's rights issues. Spine cocked, but tight; corners bumped with heavy wear; moderate wear to spine extremes & other edges; 1/4' x 5/8' wound in the cloth on the back cover; spine gilt slightly dulled; light foxing on front & rear endpapers, front flyleaf, frontispiece & tissue o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. 2 volumes. 1201 pp. Tall 8vo. Gray cloth with title gilt-lettered & author silver-lettered on spines. Top of the spines have a blue panel with 2 silver stars above a pair of crossed swords. Top edges red. Endpapers illustrated by Edwin Forbes. VOLUME 1: Frontispiece + 27 other b/w plates. 12 maps. The blue panel on the spine is worn exposing the cloth beneath on the extreme left edge & dulling the color over the remainder; the area on the front cover adjacent to the panel has a 1/4' wide area of wear exposing the cloth beneath, & lighter wear gradually subsiding over an area an inch or so into the front cover o/w Very Good, i.e. shows signs of careful use with no significant defects. VOLUME 2: Frontispiece + 22 other b/w plates with 37 illustrations. 13 maps. Very Good, i.e. shows signs of careful use with no significant defects. No slipcase. 1st edition. 506, [2, ads]pp. /702pp. Tall 8vo. Full black leather with the covers of both volumes blindstamped with an ornate frame. Volume 1, but not Volume 2, has a gilt-stamped decoration in the center of the front cover consisting of many military scenes amid patriotic symbols & themes. The spines of both volumes are gilt-decorated with floral vines surrounding an upper cartouche with the short-title, author & volume number in gilt and a lower cartouche featuring the goddess Liberty bearing a flag, an eagle & the U.S. Capitol. All edges marbled. VOLUME I: (Hurlbut, Williams & Co.) has a vignette on the title page, frontispiece & 13 other tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates, The leather is cracked here & there along both exterior joints, but does not affect the inner hinges which, along with the spine, are as tight as new; the bottom edge of the spine shows a little chipping to the leather finish; the back cover has a rubbed area about 1 1/4' along the bottom edge; the front cover has a rubbed spot about 3/16' x 3/16' on the bottom edge; endpapers are tanned; scattered foxing on the initial pages, frontispiece & title pages, and thereafter occasional spots except for several plates & their tissue-guards which have foxing spots which do not seriously affect the quality of the plates; o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. VOLUME II: (American Publishing Co.) has a frontispiece & 11 other tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates. 1/2' crack in the leather at the bottom of the front exterior joint; a little wear at the top of the spine; occasional spots of foxing & a few lightly tanned pages throughout with the same condition of the plates as in the first volume o/w Very Good. The gilt on both volumes is bright. SEE SCAN. This book will require extra postage for Priority Mail shipping.
