1st edition. 251pp. 16mo. Dark green cloth with gilt-lettered & decorated spine. Dark brown endpapers. Title page has a presentation from the author's daughter ('For my dear Mrs. Speed from her admiring and affectionate friend Julie Burnett Stevens - Boston Mass Nov. 8, 1921. And fate was kind!'). Julie Burnett Smith Stevens, the wife of Boston attorney Oliver Crocker Stevens, was the daughter of the author and ex-governor of Vermont, John Gregory Smith. Regarded by some as science fiction, and by others (some Jehovah's Witnesses in particular) as a religious revelation by a fallen angel to the author. The book presents an account of the conditions on earth prior to the Biblical flood. Bottom 2' of the spine a little darkened, top edge dusty, a minor bump & a little wear along the edge of the back cover o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. 1st edition. 415, [416]pp. 8vo. Gray cloth with spine silver-lettered with author's name & the title gray-lettered within a silver panel. Ilsa was L'Engle's second novel, and has never been reprinted since its initial publication. Spots of wear along cover edges, edges of the textblock have light foxing, light foxing on front endpapers & back free endpaper, heavier & more extensive foxing on back free endpaper o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. SALESMAN'S SAMPLE/ DUMMY. sm4to. Grey cloth with a pastedown photo illustration of McKinley within an oval surrounded by a flag shield in red, white & blue. An eagle is perched on the top of the shield while a spray of gilt laurel leaves, joined with a ribbon just below the shield, extend up along the sides. The title is gilt-lettered at the top of the front cover, as is 'Memorial Edition' at the bottom. The back cover shows the spine which has the title in gilt below which is a stamped colored flag with a eagle, laurel sprays & rays in gilt. Selected pages of text & illustrations from the complete book including the frontispiece & 48 plates. A sample of leather spine binding is also included. The subscription list is unused. Cloth portions of both covers are mottled & appear as light gray against medium gray; the front cover pastedown has a 3/8' x 1/8' edge chip & minor scratches; some wear to the back cover decoration; the frontispiece has a tear within the image repaired with archival tape on the back (SEE SCAN) o/w Good, i.e. obvious signs of use with no major defects.

SALESMAN'S SAMPLE. sm8vo. Brick-red cloth with the short title in gilt at the top of the front cover below which is a portrait of Blaine in gilt enclosed in a black framed circle. Laurel branches in black emerge from behind the circle which rests upon a black fasces with a trailing ribbon. 'Authentic Edition' is giltstamped in the bottom right corner. The back illustrates the gilt-lettered spine which is decorated with a laurel branch in black. Frontispiece & 6 other b/w plates on coated paper. 32 of the initial pages of the full book are followed by 30 pages repeating all of the 32 except the title page. Following the 6 sample plates, there is an advertisement for 'The Life & Reminiscences Of General Wm. Tecumseh Sherman by Distinguished Men Of His Time' on the verso of which is the blurb about, and the binding option for, the Blaine book. Original subscription list present & unused. The front cover has an area darkened to brown along the top, down the right side, and in the lower left corner (see scan) with most of the gilt on the title faded or worn; spine extremes worn; a faint dampstain in the lower right corner of the back cover; some very light foxing on the title page o/w Good, i.e. obvious signs of use with no major defects.
