The spine is lettered black & decorated with red & green triangles. Frontispiece + 13 other chromolithographic plates including 2 double-page plates illustrated by Edgar Keller. Further illustrated with many b/w and 2 & 3-color cuts by Keller. Illustrated endpapers. All edges & corners worn; cloth around pastedown a little faded; heavy wear to spine extremes, but no fraying; pastedown has edge wear, light soiling, a few scattered faint stains & scratches; edges of the textblock browned; very occasional faint illustration ghosts, small stain spots, and finger smudges in margins on some interior pages other than the plates - none of which are seriously detractive. xii, 127 pp. sm8vo. Green cloth with front cover illustrated & lettered in gilt. Gilt-lettered spine. Color & b/w frontispieces, 17 b/w other plates illustrated by R. Bruce Horsfall. The frontispieces are identical except one is in b/w and the other in color. Ms. Hyer (1892 - 1983) was a South Carolina Poet Laureate 1974-1983, and the author of two now Rare Children's Books of which this is one. Note that the publisher did not have a consistent practice of identifying first editions. Gilt on spine faded, spine extremes worn, corners a little rubbed, endpapers slightly tanned o/w Very Good, i.e. signs of careful use with no significant defects. No dustjacket if issued. See PHOTO.

Some light fox freckling on the top edge, several tiny spots on the bottom edge, & 'Amanda Watson-Will Crade 8C Library Prize' written in ink on the front free endpaper (Watson-Will is now an Australian artist specializing in artists books.) o/w Fine (No defects)/ DJ ( The front panel has a light diagonal crease across the top edge & several creases across the upper right corner, & a 1/4' tear on the upper edge repaired with cellotape on the reverse. A 1' tear at the top of interface between the front panel & front flap has also been repaired with cellotape. A 2' x 1 1/2' moisture stain on the reverse of the spine panel is not seen on the front side. The price has been cut out of the bottom of the front flap leaving a 1 1/2' x 7/8' section missing. The exterior of the jacket is protected with plastic film). Note: the cellotape on the reverse of the jacket is too clear to be seen on the scan. SEE SCAN. ISBN 0333154231.
