106 ..... Souvenir Card: BEST WISHES OF YOUR TEACHER.

5' x 8 1/2' h. Diecut, embossed, chromolithograph printed on heavy, glossy stock. This is a double card with the edges of both irregularly scalloped; the cards are tied together with a pink ribbon through a hole at the top of each. The front card has a broad outer border of cross-hatching with blue dots over pink in the diamonds & is overlaid with embossed flowers, buds, leaves & bows outlined in gilt. The inner panel is light blue shading toward white at the top & bottom & contains 'With Best Wishes of Your Teacher' in dark brown at the top. The middle of the panel & part of the outer border is covered with large circular frame attached to a handle (could be a fan, hand mirror, or magnifying Glass) tilted to the right within which is an illustration of people approaching a lighted church in a snowy landscape. Roses & forget-me-nots are tied to the handle with a ribbon & the bouquet extends around the bottom of the frame. The second card contains 11 'Gems Of Thought' printed in dark red on pink-coated stock within an ornate border. The back of the second card is handwritten in ink 'Presented to Verdie M. Herman by H. W. Smith'. [Verdie Matilda Herman was born July 6, 1893 in Penn Township, Snyder County, PA]. Cards with 'best wishes' from teachers were popular from the late 19th C. until WW1. Some were given to graduating students as souvenirs (titled as such & often with the names of classmate printed on the second card). Others were clearly given at Christmas. This card could he used for either purpose. The second card has tape stains along the bottom edge, a faint crease on the tip of the top right corner, & an area on the bottom edge of the back where the pink coating is chipped o/w Fine (no defects). Celluloid. 1/2 d. B.B. Co./ ROCH.N.Y. [Bastian Bros. Rochester, NY] stamped on the metal back along with crossed tongs & tin snip within a circle within an oval enclosing UNION LABEL. This design was used into 1940s. The Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance and Bartenders International League of America was organized in 1890 and received its charter from the American Federation of Labor in 1891. Its many affiliates and local unions in the U.S. & Canada have used different names over the years incorporating the types of food service workers they covered, which accounts for the appearance of their logo in many contexts. The union has register several very similar logos and H.R.E.I.A. since its inception, but the one on this pickback was registered April 21, 1943 with the serial number of 71460049. 32mo. Full leather with the front covers & spines ornately blindstamped with scrolling vines, foliage & flowers. Spines blindstamped in Hebrew & separated into panels with rulings. Marbled endpapers in red, brown & white. Text in Hebrew only. FAIR: All are well-used overall with the expected defects of such use. All edges are heavily worn, spines worn, corners heavily bumped, some cracks in the leather on the spine, slightly tanned pages, & soiled foreedges. Except for the edges, 2 volumes have covers almost free of scuffs & the others have scattered light scuffing on the elevated ornamentation. All have tight spines. In addition: VOLUME 1 [442 + 84pp] has a 1/2' split at top back of spine; VOLUME 3 [274 + 32 + 84pp] has a 1' section of the cover at the top of the spine missing, and the spine cracked along the front endpaper gutter. VOLUME 4 [354 + 32 + 84] has some insect holes in the front & back gutters, a 1' split at the top of the spine, and its back cover has a 3/4' l. gouged area & a 1 1/2' x 3/4' area where the leather finish has been rubbed through; VOLUME 5 [312 + 34 + 84pp] has a 1 3/8' split at the bottom front of spine, a 3/8' d. area of insect action on the back cover, and heavy foxing on the back flyleaf & endpaper. The Miller Still Grinds Goodness'. The Wayside Inn Grist Mill (known as the Sudbury Grist Mill) was built as a museum by Henry Ford and ground its first grain in 1929. In 1952, the Mill began to produce stone-ground whole wheat flour for Pepperidge Farm under a lease arrangement with the Inn. It shipped its entire output to Pepperidge Farm plants until 1967. Fine. World War I began July 28th. Herman T. Young was born in Germany in 1856 and immigrated in to U.S. in 1872. He owned a marble cutting shop in Catawissa.
