Palo Alto Edition. 334pp. sm8vo. Navy blue cloth with blindstamped decorative device within a square on the front cover. Gilt-lettered spine with a blindstamped winged decorative device. Uncut foreedge. Kathleen Thompson Norris (1880 - 1966), whose style owed much to Henry James, wrote some 80 feminine & matriarchal sentimentalist novels in the 1910s and 1920s. Her themes dominated the radio soap operas of early radio, and she was reputed to be the highest paid American writer of her day. Front hinge a little weak, but holding well; paste action on both endpaper; cloth flecked on the lower half of the edge of the front cover, along the left, right & lower edges of the back o/w Good, i.e. shows the usual signs of a used book with no abuse or important defects. No dustjacket.

Inverted nipple-shaped porcelain cup (2 1/2 d. x 1 3/4 h.) The inside of the flared rim is transfer printed Novol TABLETS -- 1/2 oz. The well is printed, starting with the lowest graduation, 3, 4, 5, 1/4 oz & 10 in blue. Includes the brass wire cup holder. Made by the Novol Chemical Mfg. Co., Brooklyn NY. Chips around the rim of the cup. Holder shows some tarnish. The Dixon alcohol burner consists of a glass reservoir stamped Dixon No 1 Made in USA and a nickelplated brass burner, which threads into the reservoir collar. A wick snuff cap is held by a chain. A wick showing use extends into wick shaft. Measures 3 1/4 h. & 2 1/2 across the bottom of the reservoir. Made by William Dixon, Inc., Newark, NJ. Very minimal signs of use with no significant defects.

The El Capitan trademark was first used by the R. L. Gerhart & Company, Lancaster, PA. in 1913 and registered in 1915. The period in which the marching soldier logo was used is not known, but the above patents for the tin itself were issued to the Passaic Metal Ware Co., the lastest of which was issued in March, 1927, the same year Passaic merged into theContinental Can Co. El Capitan tins were marked as made by Continental Can after the merger. The bottom rim of the tin has rust & the top of the lid has scattered tarnish. See the photos for the condition of the paint.
