1312 McKee Glass EAPG PATTERN GLASS: Scarce Fern Garland Syrup.
C.1900
Crystal. Non-flint. Domed, nickelplated steel lid with tab thumb handle and darkened plaster under the inner rim. Mold blown with cut-and-shut pontil. McKee Glass Co. This pattern is actually McKee's Colonial No. 20 (a pattern in the Prescut line introduced in 1905) with the decorative addition of a flower impressedbetween fern leaves in each panel. Stout (The Complete Book of McKee Glass, p. 247) shows this syrup in the unadorned No.20 pattern in her section on Prescut, but with a different style top. McKee, as did other manufacturers C. 1900, used the same top as the one offered here on many of its syrups & molasses cans. Since this syrup is not marked Prescut (as all pieces in the line supposedly were) and there is no actual documentation of when Fern Garland was produced, dating this syrup presents a problem. Roughness at the bottom of 3 of the edges dividing the panels, grizzling around the throat in-the-making, corrosion spots on & in the metal top & wear on its tab handle o/w Fine (No defects). Scarce. $

The blank used for this comport was the same one (No. 155) used by McKee in its Gold Encrusted No. 3 Line produced around during the 1920s (See Stout The Complete Book of McKee Glass, page 106 or Depression Glass III, Plate 21). The cutting is very typical of those used by McKee, but it is not shown in any books on McKee. McKee Glass Co., Jeannette, PA. 1930s. Fine, i.e. no defects. 1360 Mt. Washington Glass Co., New Bedford, MA or Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., Sandwich, MA. MT. WASHINGTON / BOSTON & SANDWICH GLASS CONDIMENT SHAKERS.
C.1890s.
Pair. Mold blown white opalware decorated with handpainted butterflies amid foliage. C.1890s. 3 3/4 h. (with top removed) & 1 5/8 d. Pewter, one-piece lids. These appear to be identical to the handpainted Matched Pillars shakers shown in Lehner, Bk. 2, p. 239, except those are only 3 1/8 h. The lids are identical to those shown in Lechner as well as those shown in Padgett (p. 20) & Avila (p. 6) where very similarly shaped shakers with handpainted decoration are attributed to Mt. Washington. However, see Lechner, Bk. 3, p. 36, where an identically shaped handpainted cruet set (named Tapered Shoulder Variation) with 3 5/8 shakers is shown for a discussion of the evidence that might point to Boston & Sandwich as the maker of the shakers.
