1118 Jones Mfg. Co., Columbus, OH C. 1930 TWINE / CORD CUTTER ADVERTISING MESSER CANDY.
C. 1930.
The front half of the tube has both sides open to received the twine which can be scooped into the opening using the rounded ends of the top & bottom of the tube. The twine is guided to the blade by a loop of heavy steel wire which extends from the front end of the handle to the front of the tube and curvesupward to the top of the tube. The blade is positioned perpendicularly to the bottom of the tube and rises to a position between the wires forming the loop. Stamped Made By Jones Mfg. Co. Pat Pend Col's. O. within a rectangle. This tool was patented May 8, 1923 [1,454,543] by Edwin R. Jones of Columbus, OH who filed an application May 2, 1922. According to the patent, the holedrilled in the end of the handle was intended to accommodate a base (also included in the patent) which would allow the tool to be used in a fixed, vertical position rather than hand held. Little is available about Messer's. It was founded by a Scottish immigrant, John Messer (b. 1840), who emigrate to the USA in 1860 and by 1870 had established a retail confectionery business in Pittsburgh, PA. A city directory for 1900 lists John and Edward Messer with John Messer & Son. Edward (b. 1875) was the youngest son of the founder, who also a son, John L. (b. 1865), who apparently continue the business in Pittsburgh. Official records list the Messer Candy Co. in Pittsburgh, the earliest being in1905 and the latest 1920. John L. is listed in the 1930 census as a confectionery manufacturer, while Edward appears in Cincinnati as a candy salesman, and an E. Messer Confectionery Co. is mentioned in a 1934 Cincinnati record. Obvious signs ofuse with no major defects.

1148 Kelland, Clarence Budington. Postcard: FAMOUS RANCHES OF ARIZONA.
Lollesgard Specialty Co. [Tucson, AZ].
Linen. Genuine Curteich - Chicago 'C.T. Art-Colortone'. Used & cancelled 1950. Front shows cattle brands used by the 42 famous Arizona ranches listed. Quote from Clarence Budington Kelland regarding how to see Arizona: 'You can't see Arizona from a motor car. Real Arizona doesn't lie along traveled roads. There is only one place from which to see this most picturesque of all states, and that is from the back of a horse. But if you can't ride a horse, the next best place to see it is from the plazza of a ranche. The Old West endures. It still exists. It is preserved in our ranches, and in every section of the state - the hospitality of the range is open to you. If you want to enjoy Arizona, Dude, go and be wrangled.' Corners a little rubbed, back has a few spots of stain and an area of faint darkening o/w Fine. See PHOTO. NOTE: Shipping for this item via 1st Class Mail is $2.00. 1190 L.G. Wright, New Martinsville, WV. L.G. WRIGHT CUSTARD GLASS PANELLED GRAPE INDIVIDUAL CREAMER.
C. 1970.
A reproduction of Kokomo-Jenkins Glass Co.'s Pattern #507. 3 3/16 h. x 2 9/16 d., smaller than the individual creamers in made in Panelled Grape' by Westmoreland Glass, which also created its own molds using a variant of theoriginal Kokomo-Jenkins pattern. L.G. Wright offered the individual creamer & a matching sugar in its Panelled Grape in many colors, but there are no reports of a set in custard (See Measell & Roetteis' book on Wright). Wright did offer various other pieces in custard from 1969 to the mid 1970s. My attribution is based on the detailed discussion on the differences between Westmoreland & Wright individual creamers on Page 80 of Lorraine Kovar's Westmoreland Glass 1950 - 1984.
